The How’s and Why’s of Employee Training and Development

By / December 4, 2014 / Uncategorized No Comments

Providing employee training and professional development are an important part of your role as an employer. Not only will it make your employees feel valued, like you’re investing in them for the long haul, but it will also make your workforce smarter, keep employees knowledge up-to-date and leave them better equipped to handle whatever comes in the future.

This week I’ve been reading about the benefits of providing employee training and professional development — and how to do so at different types of organizations. Read on to learn more.

Why Career Development And Advancement Aren’t the Same Thing. Fast Company: “Organizations need to carve out time for employees to take additional classes (either those created by the organization or other professional development). The culture of the organization needs to shift to make it clear that people are expected to continue advancing themselves. Employees who take part in continuing education should be rewarded and compensated for continuing to develop their skills.”

Commitment to Growth: Companies Continue to Spend on Employee Training. Associations Now: “A new study shows that organizations in a wide variety of industries are making investing in employee training a priority. The Association for Talent Development analyzed training and development expenditure data submitted by 340 organizations of all shapes and sizes for its 2014 State of the Industry Report. The group found that, on average, organizations spent $1,208 per employee in 2013—a 1 percent increase over the previous year. Further, the number of hours that employees spent on training and development increased to 31.5 hours from 30.3.”

Get Your Boss on Board with Your Career Development Plan. The Goodwill Blog: “Once you’ve completed your plan, return to it frequently with your employer to ensure that you’re staying on track with your career development goals. But don’t consider it set in stone. Priorities and situations change over time, and it may be necessary to review and revise your plan multiple times as you advance in your career.”

The Top 5 Things Employees Love In Online Training Courses. eLearning Industry: “Employees love the fact that they can access their online training courses anywhere, anytime. They don’t have to stay after hours in the office to complete mandatory training, or to be stuck at their desk if they want to learn more about a specific task or process. They can even access their training on-the-go by using their mobile devices, if applicable.”

Want Savvier, Less-Stressed Employees? Provide Them With Financial Education. The Huffington Post: “Our recent report, A Closer Look: What’s Working in Financial Education, sought to answer these questions and found that a variety of advantages exist, for both the employer and employee, when financial education programs are successfully put in place.
This includes having employees who are less likely to pull out their hair or bite their fingernails because they’re more confident in their financial wellbeing and better prepared for retirement. And, less stressed employees provide long-term rewards for employers because these staff members are smarter about their future and more focused during work.”
