2015 HR Trends Every Employer Needs to Know About

By / January 6, 2015 / Uncategorized No Comments

2014 was a busy year for HR professionals and employers, and the coming year is likely to bring its own challenges. To help you stay on top of essential information, here are four 2015 HR trends every employer needs to know about.

Millennials Are Still Important

The latest data from the Duke/CFO Magazine Global Business Outlook Survey found CFOs saying their firms aren’t adapting to millennials very well and could do a better job managing them. And many employers feel they aren’t doing a good job of recruiting millennials. This may be the year to change that.

“In 2015, HR managers should reconsider their recruiting tactics for identifying and hiring top millennial talent,” says Jo Clarkson, U.K. operations director of the Alternative Board. “This begins with promoting the company’s soft benefits — company events, gym reimbursements, work-from-home opportunities, and so on.” Clarkson recommends focusing on online recruiting efforts that reach high-potential millennials where they are: social media and online posting.

“Hiring will turn into more and more of a social effort in 2015, so recruiters should start polishing their Twitter skills and get hashtagging!”

The ACA Will Continue to Present Challenges

As more aspects of the law go into effect and federal regulators issue additional guidance, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will continue to present challenges to employers. Advances in technology have made some jobs easier, but ACA compliance and reporting will continue to be challenges for HR departments and may be compounded by upcoming elections and the ongoing possibility of changes.

Retaining Employees Will Become More Difficult

If employees aren’t feeling challenged or motivated by their jobs, they may start looking elsewhere as the economy continues to improve. Retaining employees, especially high-performing ones, will be an important part of HR’s job in 2015.

“Make sure that employee development and opportunities for mobility remain a priority, especially for longer tenured employees who often feel like they are being taken for granted in favor of younger, less experienced talent,” says career coach Roy Cohen.

“Equally important, reward employees fairly and generously based on their contributions to the bottom line and to increased efficiencies and productivity,” Cohen says. “Incentive-based compensation goes a long way to inspire and motivate ambitious employees. The opportunity cost to replace those who leave for a marginally better salary elsewhere is significant when you factor in training, learning curves, and having to pay market rate.”

Work permit availability

The Obama administration’s recent move to expand work permit availability in 2015 and 2016 potentially opens up the opportunity for millions of new applicants to be eligible for lawful employment, says immigration lawyer Harlan York. “Industries ranging from agriculture to hospitality to construction and restaurants will likely be most impacted.”

Because of this, HR must continue to be vigilant when it comes to I-9 forms to ensure compliance with the law, York says. “Employers who violate the regulations governing verification of employment eligibility may be subject to civil and criminal penalties depending on the degree of infractions.”
